An Interview With Dr. Turowski, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Winnetka

What is Rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes the nose for cosmetic or reconstructive purposes. As a cosmetic procedure, such a surgery can reduce the general size of the nose or alter the shape for a more pleasing appearance. If performed for reconstructive purposes, a rhinoplasty can restore proper functioning of the nose in cases of injury or abnormalities in the nasal cavity.

What does a Rhinoplasty procedure involve?

There are two ways to perform a rhinoplasty, using either the closed or open methods. The only clear difference between the two methods is the presence of a small inconspicuous incision placed on the skin under the nostrils if the open method is preferred. Otherwise, all other incisions are made intranasally (on the inside of the nose) and do not leave any noticeable scars. The surgery is performed by separating the soft tissues of the nose from the underlying framework. The cartilage and bone are then reshaped and altered to achieve the desired affect. The entire procedure usually takes about 1.5 hours and is performed under anesthesia and on an out patient basis.

What are the risks associated with Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty carries the same risks as any other surgery. In general, this is not an abnormally dangerous surgery. However, it is important to research the surgeon that you choose and to discuss the surgery beforehand with your doctor. In the end, most patients agree that the minor aesthetic and functional benefits greatly outweigh any possible risks.

What are the benefits of Rhinoplasty?

The benefits of Rhinoplasty include a fast recovery time, a relatively fast procedure time, and the ability to greatly improve the quality of a patient's life. Swelling after the procedure is performed is very minimal and can usually be covered by camouflage makeup if necessary. Furthermore, patients generally report that the pain experienced is minimal and can be controlled by an over-the-counter medicine. Most patients resume normal activity within a week and report that any pain or swelling related to the procedure was definitely worth the benefit of a new and improved nose!

Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Nose reshaping candidates should generally be in at least their mid teenage years (about 14-15 for girls and slightly older for boys). Before this age, the nasal bone is still not fully matured and the shape of the nose is not yet stabilized. Before the rhinoplasty procedure, you will have ample opportunity to discuss your options and expectations of success with your surgeon.
