An Interview With Dr. Charles K. Herman, M.D., F.A.C.S., P.L.L.C. , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Scranton

1. How many follow-up visits are needed after rhinoplasty surgery?

The required number of visits varies depending on the patient. However, a patient should expect to the visit with the surgeon one or two days after surgery to remove nasal packing, a week later to remove the splint, and a few weeks afterwards to assess healing. A few additional follow-up visits after a few weeks to months is generally recommended.

2. When are the splints removed after rhinoplasty surgery?

The splint is typically removed at 5 to 7 days after surgery.

3. When are the stitches removed after rhinoplasty surgery?

Most of the surgeries that I perform have stitches hidden inside the nose with no scars placed onto the outside of the nose. These stitches dissolve on their own in 1 to 2 weeks and do not require removal. This has the added advantage of no visible scarring on the nose after surgery. In selected cases, a small incision may need to be placed on the bottom of the nose between the nostrils (the columella). These stitches are generally removed in 5 to 7 days after surgery.

4. When is it okay after rhinoplasty surgery to run or lift weights?

It is recommended that patients avoid heavy exertion for a few weeks after surgery to reduce the risk of trauma to the nose and the risk of bleeding.

5. Is it possible for the nose to grow after rhinoplasty surgery?

Rhinoplasty surgery does not cause the nose to "grow." The nose will be swollen after surgery, often with a noticeable amount of swelling and bruising on the nose and around the eyes for 1 to 2 weeks. Most swelling is resolved in a few weeks, but the final result may not be visible for 6 to 12 months, as some swelling may persist, especially along the tip of the nose. With aging, the nose can lengthen and droop with time, but this is not the result of the rhinoplasty surgery.

6. What kind of material is used when grafts are needed to rebuild the nose?

The most commonly used material for grafting is cartilage. The cartilage is typically obtained from the nasal septum (inside the nose) or the ear.

7. What sort of surgeon is preferable?

Patients should seek a surgeon with experience in rhinoplasty surgery and Board Certification in his or her discipline. Rhinoplasty surgery is most commonly performed by plastic surgeons or ear/nose/throat surgeons.
