An Interview With Dr. Vincent, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Rockville

What is Rhinoplasty?

A rhinoplasty refers to the plastic surgery procedures done to change the cosmetic size and shape of the nose.

What are the benefits of Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasties are among the most common plastic surgery procedures. A rhinoplasty has the benefical effect of reshaping the nose so that it enhances one s appearance and the nose looks more compatible with the face.

Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Any individual that is very conscious about the size and shape of their nose is potentially a good candidate for a rhinoplasty.

What are the risks associated with Rhinoplasty?

There is always a risk of disappointment with the final outcome of any cosmetic procedure, and this holds true for rhinoplasties. While most patients do very well, a some patients do not heal as expected, and the outcome is not as favorable as expected. Another rhinoplasty or "touchup" procedure may be necessary.

What does a Rhinoplasty procedure involve?

A rhinoplasty procedure involves surgically addressing the cosmetic concerns of the patient. Many rhinoplasties are done as "closed rhinoplasties" which means that the incisions that are necessary to reshape the nose are made on the inside of the nose and cannot be seen. Some patients require and "open rhinoplasty" where a small incision is made at the base of the midline of the nose called the columella. This approach allows the surgeon direct visualization of the internal structures of the nose which can be advantageous in some cases. The operation involves removing and shaving the nasal cartilage and/or boned to reduce the fullness on the top of the nose(referred to as a dorsal hump), refine the tip of the nose, and make the nose smaller and more compatible with the face.

How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?

The initial recovery lasts 7-10 days. A cast(usually made of plastic) is often needed to protect the nose for the first week. Most patients will see some bruising under their eyes, but the bruising typically is gone in the first week. Most of the swelling will be gone in the first few weeks, but it can take anywhere from 3-12 months to truly appreciate the final result. It is best to take 7-10 days off from work or school, but weight lifting or competitive sports should be avoided for 6-8 weeks. A nasal guard may be desirable when playing any competive sport for the first 3-6 months as well.
