An Interview With Dr. Jennifer Keagle, M.D. , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Pasadena

Is it true that the nose is more runny after rhinoplasty?

It is true that the nose will feel more congested after rhinoplasty, especially if a septoplasty is done and packing is left in place or there are incisions made within your nose.

Does rhinoplasty leave scars?

There are two types of rhinoplasty: open and closed. Open rhinoplasty utilizes a scar on the front of your columella (front of the nose) and on the inside of your nostrils. I do the scar on the outside in a stair-step shape so when it heals it usually very minimal and incredibly difficult to see. A closed rhinoplasty utilizes incisions placed within your nose. Whenever there are incisions, there is a possibility for scars. However, a closed rhinoplasty has the scars hidden inside your nose. Most often, I do open rhinoplasty. I find that I can see and manipulate the anatomy much more skillfully with it. My patients are very pleased and the scarring is minimal.

What type of anesthesia is required for rhinoplasty?

It can be done under local anesthesia, MAC (no breathing tube) or general anesthesia (totally out). I prefer to do it under general anesthesia and the patients prefer it also.

What is revision rhinoplasty?

Once someone has already had a rhinoplasty, when they come back for another surgery it is called revision or secondary rhinoplasty.

What specifically can be achieved with rhinoplasty?

There are many parts to the nose. It is all based on the patient’s wishes and expectations. In addition to improve breathing (if that is an issue), one can remove a bump, shorten the nose, change the bridge, alter/change the shape of the tip, narrow the nostrils and straighten the nose, to name a few changes.

What can I expect during a rhinoplasty consultation?

A rhinoplasty consultation with me usually takes around an hour. I will talk to the patient, get a medical/surgical history and discuss their goals. An external and internal exam is performed on the nose and face. Then the surgical plan is discussed with the patient and questions are answered.

How much time will I need to take off from work?

You will be bruised and have a dressing and possibly packing in your nose for a week. I believe taking a week off of work is safe. If you are not concerned about the bruised/swollen appearance and feel fine you could even return sooner.
