An Interview With Dr. James Lowe MD , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Norman

1. Is rhinoplasty ever covered by insurance?

There are some components of a rhinoplasty that may or may not be covered by an insurance company. Procedures performed solely for cosmetic reasons are not covered. Most insurance companies will pay for procedures that improve breathing when necessary. In our office after we have evaluated a patient for rhinoplasty, we will submit any procedures deemed medical to your insurance for pre-approval.

2. Where are the incisions made?

The incisions for rhinoplasty are typically hidden inside the nose. A small incision is sometimes required at the base of the nose, but it is usually quite difficult to see once the wound has fully healed.

3. Is it common to have black eyes after surgery?

It is common for patients to have black eyes after rhinoplasty when the nose is broken at the base surgically. Breaking the nose is required in about half the rhinoplasty operations that I perform to narrow the nose or straighten a deformity. "Raccoon eyes" or black eyes are rare following minor rhinoplasty that does not involve nasal fracturing.

4. Where is rhinoplasty usually performed?

Rhinoplasty is usually performed as an out-patient surgical procedure. I perform rhinoplasty at the facility that has the best care and equipment based on the patient's medical needs.

5. Is the patient asleep during the rhinoplasty surgery?

Typically, a patient is placed under general anesthesia and is fully asleep for complex rhinoplasty surgery. Smaller procedures to address a small nasal hump may be performed under light sedation.

6. If you can' t eat anything before surgery, how soon afterward can you eat?

Most patients are able to tolerate a soft diet 3-4 hours after surgery. Patients undergoing more advanced nasal reconstruction may not eat food until the following morning. Most patients do not have much of an appetite for the first 24 hours after rhinoplasty surgery.

7. Will I be able to drive myself home after my rhinoplasty procedure?

Rarely, can patients drive themselves home after rhinoplasty. Patients who are undergoing sedation or general anesthesia need to have someone drive them home after surgery. We encourage patients to have a responsible person with them at home the first night after surgery. Having some help around the house the first several days after a rhinoplasty is always a good idea. No need to be a hero, unless you have to.
