An Interview With Dr. Jejurikar, A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Dallas

What does a Rhinoplasty procedure involve?

Rhinoplasty should be performed by a board certified plastic surgeon or facial plastic surgeon. It is most commonly performed under general anesthesia, with the patient completely asleep. Rhinoplasty can be performed through an open or closed approach. In open rhinoplasty, a small incision is made across the base of the nose and within the nostrils. In closed rhinoplasty, otherwise known as endonasal rhinoplasty, the incisions are made entirely within the nostrils. There are benefits to both approaches. In closed rhinoplasty, postoperative swelling tends to be less. Open rhinoplasty allows greater visualization of the nasal architecture, particularly the nasal tip and base.

Are there any age restrictions for undergoing rhinoplasty?

Patients should have noses that are close to adult size prior to undergoing rhinoplasty. For that reason, the operation is generally avoided in patients under the age of 14 years.

What is Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty is nasal surgery designed to change the appearance of the nose. In some cases, the operation can also address functional breathing problems.

What are the benefits of Rhinoplasty?

Rhinoplasty can be used to give patients a more cosmetically pleasing nose. Common complaints addressed with this operation include reducing the size of a prominent nasal hump, reducing the width of the nose, and creating a shapelier tip.

Who is a good candidate for rhinoplasty?

Patients should be in good general health and have realistic expectations. Not all nose shapes and sizes are achievable in all patients.

How long can I expect the results to last?

Provided that nasal trauma is avoided, the results should last for many years.

What are the risks associated with Rhinoplasty?

All patients experience some swelling after surgery. In general, swelling is present to some extent for 6-12 months after surgery. Bleeding and bruising are also relatively common. The most significant concerns are for breathing problems after surgery and for lack of satisfaction with the final postoperative results. The national rates for secondary rhinoplasty are thought to approach 10%.

How long does it take to recover from rhinoplasty?

Patients generally miss between 1-2 weeks of work. They are asked to refrain from strenuous physical activity for six weeks postoperatively. It takes 6-12 months to see the final postoperative results.
