An Interview With Dr. Arturo K. Guiloff M.D., P.A. , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon For Moms In Boca Raton

1. Is rhinoplasty ever covered by insurance?

A cosmetic rhinoplasty is never covered by medical insurance. Only internal functional procedures on the septum, turbinates or release of scarring is possibly covered by insurance plans.

2. Where are the incisions made?

There are mainly two approaches to a rhinoplasty. In the so called "closed rhinoplasty" approach the incisions are made internally, inside the nose, in between the nose cartilages. The "open rhinoplasty" approach has a very small incision at the base of the columella and then connects to internal incisions. The surgeon will decide which is the best approach on every specific patient.

3. Is it common to have black eyes after surgery?

Usually the black eyes after surgery are caused by internal bruising due to the need of performing a limited break of the nasal bones in order to obtain the best shape. This is not necessary in every patient but a significant number will require it.

4. Where is rhinoplasty usually performed?

It is performed as an outpatient procedure in the office operating room or at the hospital.

5. Is the patient asleep during the rhinoplasty surgery?

Patients in their majority undergo "twilight anesthesia" or IV sedation so they are asleep but breathing on their own.

6. If you can't eat anything before surgery, how soon afterward can you eat?

You can have measured amounts of food or liquids as soon as you are fully awake and you have no issues like nausea or breathing problems.

7. Will I be able to drive myself home after my rhinoplasty procedure?

No. You will need somebody to drive you home since you will still be slightly impaired after the surgery.
