An Interview With Dr. Joseph A Mele , A Qualified Plastic Surgeon In Berkeley

1. Is rhinoplasty ever covered by insurance?

It depends. Insurance does not normally cover cosmetic changes to the external surface of your nose. It will sometimes cover surgery to improve airflow in case of airway obstruction. You would need to check with your insurance company to see what is covered and what is not covered.

2. Where are the incisions made?

For a "closed rhinoplasty" two incisions are made, one inside each nostril. For an "open rhinoplasty" the two incisions are connected between the nostrils. For rhinoplasty to narrow the nostrils or the base of the nose, incisions are made along the the base of the nostrils. More information on rhinoplasty is available on my personal web siite: http://www.drmele.com/rhino.html

3. Is it common to have black eyes after surgery?

Often you will have black eyes for a few days after nasal surgery. This is less likely for tip rhinoplasty, and more likely if the bone needs to be narrowed or broken.

4. Where is rhinoplasty usually performed?

For healthy patients, I perform your rhinoplasty in an Accredited outpatient surgery facility.

5. Is the patient asleep during the rhinoplasty surgery?

Almost always the patient is asleep during the rhinoplasty surgery.

6. If you can' t eat anything before surgery, how soon afterward can you eat?

As soon as you are fully awake, and feel hungry you can eat. It is best to start light, and gradually increase your diet.

7. Will I be able to drive myself home after my rhinoplasty procedure?

No. Surgery requires sedation, and you should not drive until the effects of the anesthesia have resolved. For most people this takes 1 or 2 days.
