What type of anesthesia is required for rhinoplasty?
Most doctors use general anesthesia when doing rhinoplasty surgery, however, some use only local anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation.
What if you re unhappy with the results of your rhinoplasty?
This is not an uncommon problem and may result in the need for a second trip to the operating room to address the issue. It is usually best to wait for at least six months following the initial surgery to have a secondary procedure, however, as the tissues are still settling during this period.
Is it true that the nose is more runny after rhinoplasty?
There may be some initial drainage following rhinoplasty surgery, however, I have not heard any patients complain about their nose being more runny in the long term.
Does rhinoplasty leave scars?
Rhinoplasty surgery using the "closed " technique only leaves scars on the inside of each nostril where they are not seen. An "open " rhinoplasty has the same scars as a "closed " rhinoplasty, however, in addition, there is a small scar across the skin of the columella, the area between the nostrils, that may be seen later. This added incision allows the surgeon to elevate the skin better so that he can see and work with the underlying structures of the nose better. The scar itself tends to be very thin and rarely visible except on very close inspection.
What are the risks associated with Rhinoplasty?
The most common risk for a rhinoplasty is patient dissatisfaction. Even the best rhinoplasty surgeons in the world will tell you that they take approximately one out of five patients back for a second procedure due to patient dissatisfaction with their results. The patient has in mind what they would like to have done and the doctor has in mind what he thinks he can accomplish with the patient s nose. Hopefully, these expectations are close. Other risks could be overdoing the surgery, leaving the patient with a pinched nose, a nose that is too narrow, or a nose that appears too "scooped out " on top.
